Greetings!

What a great Club Assembly last week! Thanks to all the directors for their presentations. District Governor nominee Isaac Owolabi sent me this note about the meeting:

What a well-run meeting you had today! Yes, it was club assembly but was fun and very informative. If I were to be a potential member today, I would join the club in a "heart beat."  Thanks so much to you, your board members, and the entire membership for a great hospitality. I would like to come back again, and I also look forward to our work together in the years ahead. Your club is one of our best clubs in District 7670. Please keep up the good fellowship. Share my well wishes with the entire club next week.

Our program this week is Pam Meister, Director and Curator at the WCU Mountain Heritage Center.

Also I want you to be aware of the Charlie’s Challenge event on January 28.  This is not a Sylva Rotary event but I am sharing because Charlie was such a huge part of our Club. Contact Sara Goodson for more information.

Menu for Thursday: Pork loin with sides.

Greeter this week is Vance Davidson. Next week: Polly Colville.

The official Rotary Weight Loss Challenge weigh-in will be at next week’s meeting on January 26. The Health and Wellness Manager at the Department on Aging will be recording the initial weight for anyone who wants to participate (no rocks in pockets!). She will be at the meeting at 11:45 am and will keep all records confidential. The final weigh-in will be at the end of May to give everyone 4 months. I will be working with the Board to identify the prize for the individual who has the largest percentage of weight loss. Let me know if you have any questions and if you plan to participate!

Below is an update from our Global Scholarship recipient Chelsea Phipps:

This week I spoke at the Newport Pagnell club along with Brenna, who is another Rotary Global scholar. Gary and David, the president and a member from my host club in Winslow, joined me for the trip. This is my third time speaking -- the first was at a district council meeting and the second was for my host club. I have another speaking engagement coming up in March. More to come, I'm sure!

School is going really well. I've just started back this week for my second term. The last term flew by incredibly fast -- I can't believe it! I'm loving London as well, just as much -- if not more -- than I hoped I would.

Best,
Chelsea

Remember that an easy way to do a make-up for a missed meeting is our Podcasts page on the Web at http://podcast.sylvarotaryclub.org. Click on the button underneath the photo of any of the speakers (it looks like the forward "arrow" button you'd see on most CD or DVD players), and your computer should start to play the presentation on your computer's speaker. THANKS to Scott Baker for creating and maintaining that page!
